During the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) 2024, a citizen science initiative spanning four days, bird watchers across India documented a remarkable total of 1,036 bird species. Kerala emerged with the highest number of bird checklists, while West Bengal reported the maximum number of species. These findings were released as part of the preliminary results of the GBBC on Monday, indicating India's significant contribution to global bird diversity documentation.
The GBBC, an annual event engaging bird enthusiasts worldwide, aims to count birds and contribute to bird conservation efforts. Participants, ranging from amateurs to experts, contribute observations from various locations, including backyards, parks, and nature reserves. The event, initially launched in 1998, has grown into a global phenomenon, with participants from over 100 countries contributing to the documentation of millions of birds.
