The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced that August 2024 was the "Warmest August" recorded in India since 1901. The all-India average monthly minimum temperature reached a record 24.29 degrees Celsius, surpassing the normal of 23.68 degrees Celsius.
This unprecedented warmth was influenced by multiple favorable weather factors across local, regional, and global scales. The southwest monsoon remained active for most of the month due to six low-pressure systems, including one that intensified into the rare Cyclone Asna in the Arabian Sea on August 30.
According to Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, IMD's Director General, the significant rainfall and persistent cloud cover during August contributed to the higher minimum temperatures. The central region of India, in particular, experienced temperatures above the average.
Overall, India faced 16.5 low-pressure-affected days in August. Southern peninsular India and central India recorded their warmest August in 123 years, reflecting the unusual climatic conditions of this month.
