India to buy 5 more S-400s, Op Sindoor hero, amid intensifying West Asia conflict

India has cleared a proposal to procure five additional Russian S-400 air defence missile systems — hailed as the “Operation Sindoor hero” — as the escalating West Asia conflict underscores the growing threat from missiles and drones. The Defence Procurement Board has accepted the Indian Air Force’s proposal, which will now move to the Defence Acquisition Council for further approval before final clearance.

The decision comes against the backdrop of the ongoing US-Israel-Iran confrontation, where ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and kamikaze drones have played a dominant role. Officials said the additional S-400 squadrons are aimed at reinforcing India’s layered air defence architecture along both the western and eastern fronts.

India currently operates three S-400 systems, with two more slated for induction this year under the 2018 agreement with Russia for five squadrons. The system earned high praise during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, when it prevented Pakistani fighter jets, airborne warning aircraft and electronic intelligence platforms from operating during Indian cross-border strikes on airbases, radar sites and command centres.

The S-400 was also credited with intercepting cruise and ballistic missiles during the four-day confrontation, strengthening its reputation as a critical deterrent asset. The five new systems are expected to be purchased outright, with maintenance, overhaul and repair likely to involve Indian private sector players after approvals, cost negotiations and Cabinet clearance.

In parallel, proposals are under consideration for acquiring Russian Pantsir self-propelled missile systems to protect air defence assets and counter drones, rockets and short-range missiles. The expansion reflects India’s effort to bolster preparedness amid evolving aerial threats and heightened geopolitical instability in West Asia.
