An Indian Army soldier sustained a bullet injury in the leg after miscreants opened fire unprovoked in Imphal West district of violence-hit Manipur, sources said. The incident took place at around 11.45pm on Sunday, after which the soldier was taken to Leimakhong Military Hospital, according to sources.
Miscreants also torched three houses during the incident in Chinmang village, which was later watered down by the army.
"After several hours of lull, unprovoked firing from Meitei village in Kanto Sabal started again around 2:35 a.m. and continued until 3 a.m.," the sources added. Clashes first erupted in the northeastern state of 3.” which was organized in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
The Meiteis form nearly 53 percent of the state's population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley, while the tribal Nagas and Kukis form the remaining 40 percent of the population in the hilly areas. Nearly 10,000 Army personnel and the Assam Rifles have been deployed in Manipur to restore peace. The violence has claimed over 100 victims so far.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the violence-hit state and held several key meetings. On June 1, he had said that a high-level Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team would be probing six incidents of violence in the state that indicated a conspiracy.
"The central government has constituted a committee to investigate these incidents, headed by a former Supreme Court judge. The Governor of Manipur will lead a peace committee with civil society members," Shah added.
