Indian Navy gets Made In India 'hunter-killer' submarine, warships

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated three frontline naval combatants—INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer—to the nation in a grand ceremony held at Mumbai's Naval Dockyard on Wednesday. This significant milestone aims to bolster India’s maritime capabilities and highlights its growing stature as a global maritime power.

INS Vaghsheer, referred to as a ‘hunter-killer’ submarine, is the sixth and final vessel of the P75 Scorpene Project. Built with the collaboration of France’s Naval Group, it is equipped with advanced torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, and cutting-edge warfare systems, enhancing India’s ability in anti-surface and anti-submarine operations. It also possesses intelligence gathering and mine-laying capabilities, strengthening its role as a deterrent to adversaries like China and Pakistan.

The commissioning of INS Surat marks another milestone for India’s defense capabilities. This guided missile destroyer, featuring 75% indigenous components, is one of the most advanced destroyers globally. Designed with state-of-the-art weapon-sensor packages and network-centric warfare capabilities, it reflects India’s push toward self-reliance in defense under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

INS Nilgiri, the first ship of the P17A Stealth Frigate Project, has been indigenously designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau. Its advanced features in survivability, seakeeping, and stealth signify the next generation of frigates, ensuring enhanced naval performance in the Indo-Pacific region.

Speaking at the event, PM Modi emphasized the importance of a robust Navy in the 21st century, drawing inspiration from the vision of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He reiterated India’s commitment to an open, inclusive, and secure Indo-Pacific and highlighted the country’s recognition as a reliable partner in global development.

Later in the day, the Prime Minister is set to inaugurate an Iskcon Temple in Navi Mumbai, further underscoring the cultural and strategic significance of his visit to Maharashtra.
