Former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Wednesday questioned Vice President Kamala Harris's racial identity, falsely claiming she had downplayed her Black heritage. Trump's comments came during an appearance at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) convention in Chicago, Illinois.
"She was always of Indian heritage and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn't know she was Black until many years ago when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black," Trump said. "So I don't know, is she Indian or is she Black? But you know what, I respect either one, but she obviously doesn't, because she was Indian all the way, and then all of a sudden she made a turn, and she went - she became a Black person."
Harris, who is of Indian and Jamaican heritage, condemned Trump's remarks, calling them "the same old show of divisiveness and disrespect." Harris, who launched her presidential campaign last month after President Joe Biden decided not to run, has long identified herself as both Black and Asian. She is the first Black and Asian-American person to serve as Vice President.
Harris's presidential campaign, launched on July 21, has already faced numerous sexist and racist attacks online, with some far-right accounts questioning her racial identity. Despite calls from Republican Party leaders to avoid personal attacks on Harris and focus on her policy positions, Trump has stated he will not tone down his rhetoric regarding the Vice President.
