IndiGo, one of India's largest airlines, has cancelled as many as 109 flights across the country, causing significant operational disruptions at major airports including Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Hyderabad. The widespread cancellations and delays are attributed to adverse weather conditions, primarily prolonged low visibility, which has severely impacted both arrivals and departures since the morning.
The airline confirmed the disruption in a statement, noting, “Prolonged low visibility during the morning hours has impacted air traffic movement, and as a result, some flights have been cancelled to ensure safe and compliant operations through the rest of the day.” IndiGo has issued an advisory urging passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport. Additionally, the airline recommended that travellers leave for airports early, as the poor visibility is also affecting road traffic and movement in major cities.
The most severe weather conditions were reported in Delhi, where the national capital recorded near-zero visibility on Monday morning due to a thick blanket of smog. The air quality has also reached critical levels, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) touching the 500 mark at monitoring stations like Rohini and Wazirpur. Even the lowest recorded AQI of 365 remains firmly in the "very poor" category, compounding the travel challenges caused by the adverse atmospheric conditions.
