IndiGo to add ‘fuel charge’ on flight ticket prices as oil spikes amid Iran war

India’s largest low-cost carrier IndiGo will introduce a fuel surcharge on all domestic and international flight tickets starting March 14, citing a sharp increase in aviation turbine fuel prices. The airline said the additional charge is necessary to offset the impact of rising fuel costs that have surged amid geopolitical tensions affecting global energy supplies.

According to the airline’s announcement, ticket prices will increase between ₹425 and ₹2,300 depending on the travel route. The surcharge will apply to both domestic and international sectors, with passengers on domestic routes and flights within the Indian subcontinent paying ₹425, while those travelling to the Middle East will pay ₹900.

For longer routes, the additional fuel charge will be higher. Passengers flying to Southeast Asia and China, as well as Africa and West Asia, will pay ₹1,800, while flights to Europe will see a surcharge of ₹2,300. The airline said the charges are being applied per sector based on the region of travel.

The airline noted that aviation turbine fuel accounts for nearly 40 percent of an airline’s operating costs, making the sudden rise in fuel prices a significant financial burden. Industry data indicates that jet fuel prices in the region have increased by more than 85 percent, forcing airlines to partially pass the cost on to passengers.

The surcharge will remain in effect while the airline monitors the global fuel market and operating environment. The development follows similar announcements by other carriers introducing fuel surcharges on tickets as rising oil prices continue to put pressure on airline operations.
