Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced the restoration of mobile internet services in the North-Eastern state from Saturday. These services had been suspended since May 3, following ethnic violence.
He also called for cancellattion of the free movement regime, which allows individuals residing near the India-Myanmar border to cross 16 kilometers into each other's territory without documentation.
The decision to suspend mobile internet services in Manipur was made to curb the spread of fake news, propaganda, and hate speech during a period of heightened tension. With the situation showing signs of improvement, the government has chosen to reinstate mobile internet services across the entire state, effective immediately.
Addressing a press conference here, Singh said, "The government had suspended mobile internet services on May 3 to check the spread of fake news, propaganda and hate speech. However, with the improvement of the situation, mobile internet services will be restored across the state from today.". He said the government will continue to deal with the influx of "illegal immigrants" and stressed the need for fencing the India-Myanmar border.
