Indian Premier League (IPL) streaming will no longer be completely free, as Jio-Star has introduced a hybrid subscription model. The newly merged platform, formed by Reliance and Disney’s $8.5 billion merger, will allow free access for a limited time before requiring users to subscribe. The basic plan starts at ₹149, while an ad-free version costs ₹499 for three months.
JioCinema had secured IPL’s digital rights for five years in 2023 for $3 billion and streamed matches for free. However, from 2025, the platform will shift to a consumption-based model where users can watch for free up to a certain threshold, after which a subscription will be required. A source familiar with the plans said, “Once a user develops affinity to the platform, starts watching free, becomes loyal ... the subscription will kick in then.”
The Jio-Star platform, combining JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar, will offer over 3 lakh hours of entertainment, live sports, and international tournaments. It will continue streaming major sporting events, including ICC tournaments, the Premier League, Wimbledon, and domestic leagues like Pro Kabaddi and ISL. Features like ultra-HD 4K streaming, AI-powered insights, multi-angle viewing, and real-time stats overlays will enhance the user experience.
With over 50 crore users, Jio-Star will compete with other streaming platforms offering sports and entertainment content. The entity operates more than 100 TV channels and digital platforms in India’s $28-billion media and entertainment market. Key decisions at Jio-Star are being led by Vice Chairman Uday Shankar, who previously played a major role in the growth of digital sports streaming.
Reliance, which controls the joint venture, has not provided any official statement on the new subscription model. Sources indicate that the transition aims to balance free and paid content to ensure user engagement while generating revenue from premium features. Fans who want uninterrupted IPL access will now need to subscribe once they reach their free viewing limit.
