The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially suspended the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 for one week with immediate effect, citing rising cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan. The decision, announced on May 9, follows heightened security concerns, especially after an IPL match in Dharamsala was abandoned due to nearby air raid alerts.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said the decision was taken after thorough consultation with all franchises, broadcasters, sponsors, and other stakeholders. “The Governing Council felt that given the current circumstances, suspending the league for a week was in the collective interest of everyone involved,” he said, adding that the board stands in full solidarity with the Indian armed forces and the nation.
As of now, 58 matches have been completed in IPL 2025, including the abandoned game. Twelve league-stage matches and the playoffs remain, and the board has assured that a revised schedule will be announced soon. The remaining matches were scheduled to be played across cities including Lucknow, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Jaipur.
Teams have already begun disbanding temporarily, with several players and staff booking flights for relocation. Gujarat Titans currently top the points table, followed by Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Punjab Kings, and Mumbai Indians rounding off the top four before the suspension.
