Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian have died in a helicopter crash while returning to Tabriz after inaugurating the Qiz Qalasi Dam on the border with Azerbaijan. The helicopter lost contact about 30 minutes into the flight amid heavy fog, leading to an extensive search effort involving more than 60 rescue teams. State media confirmed Raisi’s death, lauding his service and declaring him a martyr. The wreckage was located by the Red Crescent's volunteer drone team, with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei urging calm and continuity in governance.
The crash occurred in mountainous terrain, severely hampering rescue operations due to adverse weather conditions. Initial reports suggested potential survivors, but subsequent confirmation indicated the loss of all on board. The international community, including neighbouring countries and the European Union, has offered support and assistance. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other global leaders expressed condolences, emphasizing Raisi’s contributions to regional diplomacy. The incident has added to regional tensions amid ongoing conflicts involving Iran.
