A major structural incident occurred late Friday night at the University of Calcutta’s Hedua Girls’ Hostel when a large iron beam collapsed inside Room 17. The incident happened around midnight, triggering panic among the hostel residents. One student was present in the room at the time of the collapse but remained unharmed as she was at the far end of the room. Following the incident, the entire hostel building was evacuated as a safety measure.
The Hedua Girls’ Hostel houses 75 students across 25 rooms. The hostel is part of a decades-old infrastructure under the University of Calcutta. Students had reportedly been demanding repairs and structural renovations for a long time. Despite this, no major maintenance work had been undertaken. After the collapse, hostel authorities arranged for the immediate relocation of the students to ensure their safety.
According to the university, steps will now be taken for urgent renovation of the hostel. Officials confirmed that no injuries were reported and assured that repair work will begin soon. The university is expected to inspect the entire building to assess the structural condition and prevent any further incidents.
