A protest march planned by the Students’ Front of the Indian Secular Front (ISF) turned tense on Friday as police detained activists before the rally could begin. The ISF had announced a peaceful march to Vikas Bhavan, but even before they could take their first step, police intervened and took several protesters into custody.
Dramatic scenes unfolded near the protest site where ISF members were seen resisting detention. Many chanted slogans and claimed they were prepared for any physical assault, saying they had taken painkillers in advance as a symbol of protest preparedness.
Despite the claims of a peaceful demonstration, police personnel dragged ISF supporters into prison vans and transported them to the Bidhannagar Commissionerate headquarters. Several protestors were arrested on the spot as the police sought to prevent a large-scale agitation near the administrative office.
The Students' Front has accused the police of suppressing democratic expression, while authorities have cited law-and-order concerns for the pre-emptive action.
