ITR deadline for non-audited taxpayers shifted to September 15, 2025, says CBDT

The deadline for filing income tax returns for assessment year 2025-26 has been extended from July 31 to September 15, 2025. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) announced the extension primarily to accommodate delays in releasing new ITR forms and the software tools required for their submission.

The revised ITR forms have undergone significant changes this year to enhance ease of use and ensure more accurate reporting. Due to these modifications, system development and readiness were delayed, prompting the tax department to provide additional time to taxpayers.

In a statement posted online, the Income Tax Department said the move will “ensure a smoother and more accurate filing experience” for all. The department added that the updated utilities for filing are still being rolled out, and the reflection of Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) details typically begins only in early June—making the original deadline difficult for many to meet.

The extension will benefit millions of salaried employees and small taxpayers whose accounts do not require auditing. These taxpayers generally face a July 31 deadline each year, and now have an additional 46 days to file without penalties.

Taxpayers are advised to review their TDS statements carefully and familiarise themselves with the updated ITR format before filing. A formal government notification confirming the new deadline is expected shortly.
