Polling commenced on Wednesday across 24 constituencies in seven districts as part of the first phase of the three-phase Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. By 5:00 pm, a voter turnout of 58.19% had been recorded. Visuals from polling stations in the 24 constituencies showed long queues of people waiting for their turn to cast their votes.
Reports of a scuffle between PDP and BJP workers in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district have surfaced. Earlier, it was reported that BJP candidate from Kishtwar, Shagun Parihar was heckled at the Baghwan Mohallah booth.
District Election Officer Harvinder Singh commented on the enthusiastic participation, stating, “Voting has started smoothly at all polling stations, and there is a visible eagerness from voters. We expect a strong voter turnout this time and are pleased to report that the process is proceeding in a free and fair manner. I encourage those who are still at home to come out and exercise their right to vote.”
Security has been tightened at all polling stations to ensure smooth conduct, with special arrangements made for elders, women, and voters with disabilities.
