Jadavpur University administration calls meeting with protesting students on March 10

Jadavpur University authorities have scheduled a meeting with protesting students on Monday, March 10, at 11 AM. Two representatives from each student organization will attend, along with the acting Vice-Chancellor, deans of various departments, and the Deputy Registrar. The meeting comes after students issued a deadline for discussions following the unrest that began on March 1 during Webcoup’s annual general meeting.

The protests erupted after allegations of physical harassment against Education Minister Bratya Basu and acting Vice-Chancellor Bhaskar Gupta during the March 1 event. Additionally, a student was reportedly injured after being hit by the minister’s car, further intensifying tensions on campus. On March 6, students demanded a meeting with university officials by March 9, but Bhaskar Gupta was hospitalized due to health concerns. Protesters later visited him in the hospital, urging immediate discussions, and raised concerns over increasing FIRs against students and reports of possible UAPA charges.

Following the student demands, the university confirmed the meeting for March 10 at 11 AM. Protesters have stated they will not back down from their deadline of 1 PM on the same day. "The number of FIRs against students is increasing every day. There are also reports that UAPA charges might be imposed. We informed the Vice-Chancellor about all these issues," said student representatives Avinab Basu and Debarghya Yash after meeting Gupta. While it remains unclear if Bhaskar Gupta will attend due to doctors advising rest, university officials and student leaders are set to engage in discussions aimed at addressing the ongoing unrest.
