Jadavpur University experts investigate risk to water pipeline as Barrackpore Metro expansion faces delay

The expansion of the Kolkata metro network to Barrackpore has encountered a critical challenge due to the potential risk to an essential water pipeline located beneath BT Road. This pipeline is responsible for supplying drinking water to a significant portion of the city, serving areas in Kolkata and surrounding regions. The ongoing construction of the metro line, which is part of an ambitious project to extend metro services beyond the city, has raised concerns over the possible damage to this pipeline, which could severely disrupt the water supply.

The water pipeline running beneath BT Road is crucial for supplying potable water to large parts of Kolkata, including several densely populated areas. It carries a significant volume of water from treatment plants to various localities, including parts of South Kolkata, and without it, the city’s water distribution system would be deeply affected. Should the pipeline be damaged during the metro construction, almost half of the city’s population could face water shortages, creating an acute crisis.

In light of this risk, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and metro authorities have initiated a collaborative effort to address the issue. The KMC, in conjunction with other related authorities, has brought in experts from Jadavpur University to conduct a thorough investigation into the situation. The university’s team has been tasked with studying the potential impact of metro construction activities on the pipeline and the surrounding infrastructure. They are focusing on how the metro work can proceed without compromising the integrity of the water supply system.

The research being undertaken by Jadavpur University includes examining the structural design of the pipeline, the geological conditions under which it lies, and the specifics of the construction work required for the metro expansion. The university’s findings will play a crucial role in determining whether the metro project can continue as planned or whether adjustments need to be made to protect the pipeline. The experts are exploring various solutions, including the application of advanced construction techniques and technologies that may mitigate the risks to the water pipeline.

Based on the results of the research, the KMC and metro authorities will decide on the appropriate course of action. If the study indicates that there is a significant risk of damage to the pipeline, additional protective measures may need to be implemented. These measures could include rerouting the construction or reinforcing the pipeline to prevent disruption. However, such actions may lead to delays in the timeline for the Barrackpore metro extension. The final decision on whether the expansion will proceed on schedule or face postponement will depend on the expert findings and the feasibility of implementing the necessary safeguards.
