Congress, led by senior leader Jairam Ramesh, has raised concerns over the timing of the implementation of the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), just weeks before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Ramesh criticized the BJP government's decision, labeling it as "headline management" and accusing it of employing a strategy of social polarization. The political uproar intensified as opposition parties continued to assail the government over the timing and motives behind the sudden implementation of CAA rules.
Jairam Ramesh said, 'It took them 4 years and 3 months to bring this rule. The bill was passed in December 2019. A law should have been made within 3-6 months. These are only for polarization".
The Congress leader further said that the Modi government sought nine extensions from the Supreme Court and took 4 years and 3 months before notifying the rules last night. These are just for polarization – to influence the elections in Bengal and Assam. If they were doing it honestly why didn't they bring it in 2020? They are bringing it now a month before the elections. This is headline management. This is a strategy of social polarization.
