Jay Shah, Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is poised to be named the next Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Shah will take over from current chairman Greg Barclay, who has officially decided to vacate his position when his term ends in November.
Barclay, during a recent video conference with ICC directors, including Cricket Australia's chair Mike Baird, confirmed that he will not seek a third term. Shah, who has garnered significant support from key cricket boards such as England and Australia, is expected to secure the necessary votes to win the position. The ICC Chairman election requires 16 votes in total, with a simple majority of nine votes now being enough for victory, a reduction from the previous two-thirds majority requirement.
Shah, who holds goodwill among the 16 voting members, will remain BCCI Secretary for another year before entering a three-year mandatory cooling-off period in 2025. His rise to the top of the ICC signals a significant shift in international cricket governance.
