Bengal Govt elevates IPS Ajay Mukund Ranade to DGP (Law and Order)
A jeweller was attacked and robbed in Howrah district’s Jagatballabhpur area on Tuesday night. The incident took place around 8:40 PM when Pradeep Devnath, a craftsman at Devnath Jewellers near Sitapur bus stand in Jangipara, Hooghly, was returning home after closing his shop. As he neared his residence, about 100 metres away, three unidentified individuals ambushed him on a deserted stretch near Telihati village.
According to the complaint, the attackers were hiding in bushes and struck Devnath on the back of his head with the butt of a hoe, causing him to lose consciousness on the spot. They then snatched a bag from him that reportedly contained ₹1 lakh in cash, keys to the jewellery shop, and a diary containing important business records. The injured victim was later found by locals, who alerted the police.
Following the incident, teams from Jagatballabhpur and Jangipara police stations reached the spot and initiated an investigation. Police are examining the crime scene and attempting to identify the attackers. A case has been registered and efforts are underway to trace the culprits based on available leads.
