The Jharkhand Education Project Council (JEPC) has allocated around Rs 2.5 million to 219 government residential schools for girls to clean and install incinerators on campus. Each school received Rs 1.10 lakh for cleaning and purchase of essentials like huge dustbins, incinerators and others.
A JEPC official said, “Training will be imparted to school sweeper, invigilator, child parliament member and nodal teacher. Some forms of cleanliness-related activities are implemented in schools, but there is a need to modernize the infrastructure for which the schools received funding. Cleanliness must be inculcated in children."
In addition to the necessary modifications to school toilets, manual incinerators will be installed to dispose of feminine hygiene products such as sanitary napkins. Two large waste containers will be installed in each school. To inform female students about cleanliness, posters will be put up in the common areas. Schools have been instructed to set up two manual incinerators to dispose of sanitary napkins.
JEPC State Program Officer, Abhinav Kumar said, “Earlier, very small incinerators were installed in schools. They were also mostly installed in common areas, which caused inconvenience to female students. Therefore, arrangements were made to install manual incinerators. Schools have been directed to hold a children's parliament meeting on Swachhta Diwas every 19th day of the month to discuss topics related to cleanliness. In addition, monitoring will be carried out by the school's nodal teacher."
The state has 203 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas and 16 Jharkhand Balika Awasiya Vidyalayas (JBAV) covering all blocks for residential education of girls. Approximately 45,000 girls are educated in the residential school premises. The JEPC has formed a team for each district of the state. This team tours the districts, evaluates and monitors the condition of the schools and provides approvals and suggestions as needed.
All KGBV and JBAV would prioritize organizing events related to the Cleanliness Campaign. Special cleaning of WC leachate and septic tanks, large bins to be arranged in two colors, one for discarded sanitary napkins and the other for waste disposal.
