JNU fines two students ₹1.79 lakh for alcohol, hookah use, hosting outsiders

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has imposed fines totaling ₹1.79 lakh on two hostel students for violating hostel rules, including allowing outsiders into their rooms, consuming alcohol, and using hookah. The official notices, issued on January 8, state that the fines must be paid within five days. Failure to comply with the payment could result in further disciplinary actions, including eviction from the hostel.

The first notice, issued to one of the students, specifies that 12 unidentified individuals were found in the student’s room consuming alcohol and causing disturbances on the hostel premises in their absence. As a result, the student has been fined ₹80,000, which includes ₹60,000 for permitting unauthorized entry of outsiders, ₹10,000 for aggressive behavior, interference in official matters, and intimidation of hostel staff, ₹6,000 for possessing an induction stove and heater, ₹2,000 for drinking alcohol, and ₹2,000 for using hookah.

A second notice, addressed to another student, accuses them of allowing several outsiders into their room on two separate occasions—December 22, 2024, and January 5, 2025—during which alcohol was consumed. The notice further claims that the student did not cooperate when the Warden Committee and security personnel attempted to open the room during these incidents. For these violations, the student has been fined ₹99,000, including ₹85,000 for allowing unauthorized visitors on two occasions, ₹10,000 for disruptive behavior, and ₹4,000 for drinking alcohol and possessing hookah.

Both notices emphasize that any future violations or complaints will lead to immediate eviction from the hostel without prior notice. The students have been clearly informed that the fines must be paid within five days. Failure to pay could result in additional disciplinary measures, including eviction. The hostel administration has yet to provide a statement addressing the fines or the specific details mentioned in the notices.
