Kolkata's Jogesh Chandra Choudhary Law College finds itself embroiled in controversy as its Principal, Sunanda Bhattacharya, has gone on indefinite leave following allegations of securing employment through fraudulent means. The Calcutta High Court, represented by a single-judge bench of Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, ordered a CID inquiry into the matter on Thursday. Justice Gangopadhyay granted CID the authority to interrogate Bhattacharya and take him into custody if necessary, with a preliminary report due by October 18.
The investigation stems from a complaint filed in 2018 by a former member of the college's governing board, accusing Bhattacharya of involvement in financial irregularities and presenting falsified documents. The Charu Market police station subsequently filed an FIR in November 2019, after which the case was transferred to the anti-fraud section of the Kolkata Police.
Though calls for a CBI investigation into the matter were made, Justice Gangopadhyay deemed a state CID investigation sufficient, asserting that this was a local issue concerning a college. The case has stirred controversy surrounding the administration of Kolkata's renowned law college, shedding light on allegations of fraudulent practices and prompting the Principal's leave during the ongoing investigation.
