Junior Doctors' strike can take a twist amid the puja season. Meanwhile, the agitating medicos take out a rally from SSKM hospital to Esplanade with their 10-point demand. As per reports, the junior doctors are planning to change the course of their protest, ending their work boycott but announcing an indefinite hunger strike instead.
After a 10-hour long meeting that began at 8 pm on Thursday and concluded at 6 am Friday at RG Kar Medical College, doctors from all medical colleges in Kolkata participated and voiced support for this shift.
Though the work boycott is being called off, the junior doctors did not specify when they will return to work. The decision was made with patients' welfare in mind, yet the indefinite hunger strike will continue until their demands are met. The doctors had earlier launched their strike over delays in resolving the RG Kar Medical College case and allegations of harassment following a patient’s death at Sagar Dutta Medical College.
The work boycott had caused severe inconvenience to the general public. Senior doctors had urged for a return to work while continuing the agitation in other forms. The junior doctors, however, are determined to keep pressing for their demands through the hunger strike starting Monday.
