Justice delayed is justice denied: Kamduni Rape & Murder case, 10 years and waiting!

The Calcutta High Court has made significant decisions in the case of the gangrape and murder of a 21-year-old college student in Kamduni, West Bengal, back in 2013. The High Court acquitted one of the convicts, Amin Ali, and commuted the death sentences of Saiful Ali and Ansar Ali to life imprisonment.

Aminul Islam, Aminul Islam, and Bhola Naskar, who were earlier sentenced to life imprisonment, were set free as they have already served 10 years behind bars since the investigation began.

The High Court cited issues with the evidence presented by the state, failing to prove conspiracy beyond reasonable doubt and the possibility of reformation and rehabilitation, leading to the decision to commute the sentences.

Family members of the victim expressed their intention to approach the Supreme Court against the High Court's orders, arguing that the CID investigation was not adequately conducted.

The case had led to widespread protests and public outrage in WB, with CM Mamata Banerjee promising capital punishment for the accused, drawing parallels with the 2012 Delhi gang rape case. The State government is also considering challenging the High Court's decision in the Supreme Court.
