In a recent development, Justice Amrita Sinha of the court received an appeal from 60 Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates from Basirhat, requesting an extension for the submission of their nomination papers due to alleged political violence. Accepting their plea, Justice Sinha ordered an extension of the deadline for the submission of nomination papers specifically for these 60 candidates.
Justice Rajashekhar Mantha also stepped in, issuing an order that candidates, proponents, and supporters from various areas including Bhandar, Canning, Kashipur, and Basirhat should be escorted to the nomination center to ensure their safe submission. The police were entrusted with the responsibility of facilitating the process for these individuals.
However, despite these measures, complaints surfaced indicating that several candidates were unable to submit their nominations. Among the affected were 60 BJP candidates from four blocks of Basirhat. In response, the aggrieved candidates appealed to Justice Sinha's court on Friday but were unable to complete the nomination process, even with the presence of the police as instructed by the High Court.
Following the hearing, Justice Sinha emphasized the need to provide adequate police security for those who were unable to submit their nominations. The BJP candidates were instructed to file their nomination papers in the presence of the Basirhat Superintendent of Police and the Basirhat Sub Divisional Officer.
It is worth mentioning that a division bench comprising Chief Justice TS Sivajyanam and Justice Hiranmoy Bhattacharya had earlier stated that the deadline for submitting nominations for academicians and volunteers should be extended by one day. Taking this decision into account, the BJP has decided to extend the deadline for submission of nomination papers, setting the new deadline for 5 pm on Friday.
