A Kalbaisakhi (nor’wester) alert has been issued across West Bengal, with the Meteorological Department forecasting thunderstorms, heavy rain and wind speeds of up to 60 km/h in parts of South Bengal. The sudden shift in weather comes as a relief amid rising temperatures and humidity, though authorities have urged caution due to the risk of lightning and strong winds.
According to the forecast, at least five districts in South Bengal are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rainfall on Friday. Gusty winds ranging between 50 and 60 km/h, along with lightning and possible hailstorms, are also expected. Similar weather activity, including scattered rain and thunder, has been predicted in parts of the state on Thursday as well.
The state has been witnessing a steady rise in temperatures since February, with people experiencing heat and humidity even during early morning hours. However, intermittent light rainfall over the past few days has brought temporary relief. On Saturday, rain is expected to continue in districts such as Purulia, Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur and Paschim Bardhaman, while Kolkata and surrounding areas may experience winds of 40 to 50 km/h. Rain activity is also likely to persist in several districts of North Bengal.
The Meteorological Department has indicated that weather conditions are expected to gradually improve after Sunday afternoon, returning to normal thereafter. In the meantime, residents have been advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions due to the likelihood of lightning strikes and strong winds.
