A young man was allegedly shot and killed by the police in Kaliaganj, leading to renewed tension in the area.
According to local sources, the deceased, identified as Mrityunjay Barman, was shot while the police were attempting to arrest the elderly father of a Panchayat Samiti member. The incident occurred late on Wednesday night in the Radhikapur area of Kaliaganj block.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the police of firing on villagers who were protesting the attempted arrest. Mrityunjay Barman was taken to Kaliaganj Hospital, where he was declared dead. The incident has added to the already tense situation in the area, following protests and attacks on the police over the alleged gang-rape and murder of a minor child from the Rajvanshi community in Kaliaganj.
The BJP's Leader of Opposition, Shubhendu Adhikari, has claimed that the deceased youth belonged to the Rajvanshi community, adding significance to the allegations.
