The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday extended the interim bail of Sujaykrishna Bhadra, also known as Kalighat’s Kaku, till June 16 in connection with the multi-crore Bengal recruitment scam. Justice Subhra Ghosh passed the order during a hearing, extending the relief that was originally granted on February 18 due to his medical condition. The court had earlier allowed him temporary bail with strict restrictions considering his health status.
The earlier bail order permitted Bhadra to leave his residence only for medical purposes. It also barred him from meeting any political leaders or individuals from outside. These conditions remain unchanged with the extension granted. The court made it clear that the interim bail is strictly for health reasons and must be observed under all stipulated terms until the next hearing date.
As part of the bail conditions, the court had directed Bhadra to submit his two mobile numbers to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He must seek prior permission from the agency for any movement outside his home. The court also instructed the deployment of central forces to keep his activities under surveillance during the bail period. These orders continue to remain in force until June 16.
Bhadra was first arrested in 2023 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the West Bengal school recruitment scam, which is under investigation for alleged irregularities in hiring across state-run schools. After his arrest by the ED, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) also took him into custody as part of its parallel probe into the scam. He has been residing at his Behala residence in Kolkata since receiving interim bail.
The court had initially granted relief based on medical documentation provided during the February hearing. With Tuesday’s extension, the High Court has scheduled the next hearing in the case for June 16. Until then, all conditions imposed during the previous order remain effective, and both ED and CBI continue their investigation.
