Extreme tension gripped the area outside the Chanditala police station on Sunday as a scheduled protest by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) descended into a violent brawl with BJP workers. The TMC had planned to submit a memorandum to the police station to protest the recent arrests of their party leaders and workers. However, the situation turned volatile when BJP supporters reportedly began chanting "Chor Chor" (thief) slogans, targeting the arriving TMC members. The verbal spat quickly escalated into physical violence, catching the local administration off guard.
In the ensuing chaos, Serampore MP Kalyan Banerjee sustained significant injuries. Reports from the scene confirmed that the senior leader was left bleeding following the physical altercation. This incident marks the second time in just two days that a high-profile Trinamool Member of Parliament has been targeted, following the harassment and attack on Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur on Saturday. The sight of a bloodied Kalyan Banerjee has sent shockwaves through the political circles of West Bengal, further intensifying the rivalry between the two major camps.
To bring the situation under control, a massive deployment of police personnel and central forces was rushed to the spot. The security forces worked to create a buffer zone between the warring factions to prevent further bloodshed. While the TMC leadership has accused the BJP of orchestrating a planned attack on their representatives, the BJP has pointed toward spontaneous public anger. The atmosphere remains highly charged, with heavy patrolling continuing around the police station premises to ensure order.
