Kapil Dev has sparked a fresh debate by stating that the role of a modern-day head coach is more about player management than technical instruction. Speaking at the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Centenary Session in Kolkata, Kapil argued that the term "coach" is often misunderstood at the international level.
He suggested that Gautam Gambhir, who is currently facing criticism after India’s 0-2 Test series loss to South Africa, should be viewed primarily as a team manager rather than a traditional coach. Kapil explained that at the highest level of the sport, players already possess specialized skills and don't need to be taught how to play.
He questioned how a head coach could realistically "coach" a specialist like a leg-spinner or a wicket-keeper. According to him, the "real" coaches are those who train athletes during their school and college years. At the international stage, the requirement shifts toward building a cohesive environment where players feel motivated and supported.
Reflecting on Gambhir's tenure, which has been scrutinized for frequent player rotations and unconventional tactics, Kapil noted that a manager must be the figure young players look up to for encouragement.
