The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday appointed Praveen Sood as its new director for two years. After the end of Chief Subodh Kumar Jaiswal's tenure, Sood will take over. His term ends on May 25.
Jaiswal took over the helm of the CBI on 26 May 2021. He was a former Mumbai Police Commissioner and also a 1985 batch IPS officer of the Maharashtra cadre.
Earlier on Saturday, a high-level meeting was held between Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Justice of India and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha where three senior IPS officers were selected.
"The approval of the competent authority is hereby given to the appointment of Praveen Sood, batch IPS-86, as Director, CBI for a period of two years from the date of taking over from Deputy Subhodh Kumar Jaiswal, on completion of his tenure," Nila Mohanan, Director, Ministry of Personnel, Public Affairs, said in a statement complaints and pensions.
Who is Praveen Sood?
A 1986 batch IPS officer, Sood has had a distinguished career in law enforcement. During his tenure, he replaced several key functions. Sood, who is also the Karnataka Director General of Police (DGP), went to IIT Delhi. Born in 1964, he started his career in 1989 as Assistant Superintendent of Police in Mysore.
Before being posted as Deputy Commissioner of Police, Law and Order in Bangalore, he served as SP in Bellary and Raichur. In 2020, Sood was appointed Karnataka DGP, replacing officer Ashit Mohan Prasad. In his capacity as Police Advisor to the Government of Mauritius, Sood went to the Foreign Affairs Committee for a period of three years in 1999. There he worked with American and European police.
Sood, who also runs a blog site, revealed that he decided to take a break in 2003 to pursue postgraduate studies in public policy and management at IIM Bangalore and also at the Maxwell School of Governance, Syracuse University, New York.
