Exit polls for the Karnataka Assembly Elections, held on May 12, 2023, have projected that the Indian National Congress is likely to win a simple majority in the 224-member assembly.
All six major satta bazaars, or illegal betting markets, predict that the Congress will secure an average of 124 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to win 65 seats. The Janata Dal-Secular (JDS), which hopes to emerge as the kingmaker, is predicted to win 26 seats.
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, however, has expressed confidence in his party's chances, saying that the BJP will re-form the government with a "comfortable majority." He pointed to the past example of Yogi Adityanath's re-election as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, despite exit polls predicting his defeat. Bommai also claimed that his party had reliable ground reports supporting his optimistic outlook.
Karnataka Congress president DK Shivakumar, on the other hand, dismissed the exit poll results, saying that the party would win more than the projected 146 seats and form the government alone. He rejected the possibility of joining forces with other parties to achieve a majority in the assembly.
The Karnataka Assembly Elections were held after the incumbent BJP government lost its majority due to a series of resignations by legislators, triggering bypolls. The results of the elections will be announced on May 15, 2023.
