Kasba gangrape: Manojit Mishra now faces 12 cases, Gait test ordered to match CCTV footage

Two more criminal cases have been registered against Manojit Mishra, the main accused in the Kasba Law College gangrape case. With this, the total number of FIRs against him has reached 12. The fresh cases are related to an assault and molestation incident from 2023 and a violent clash in 2024. Police arrested Manojit on Tuesday in connection with these two cases. Charge sheets had already been filed in both, and he was granted bail by the court.

Officials involved in the investigation said that a "gait pattern test" has been ordered to identify suspects captured in CCTV footage from the South Kolkata Law College. This forensic technique will compare the walking style of the accused with visuals from the incident scene. The test is scheduled to be conducted on Wednesday. Manojit Mishra, along with two other students — Jayeb Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee — was reportedly seen in the footage and is not cooperating with the investigation, according to police.

Special Public Prosecutor Vibhas Chatterjee told the court that 12 criminal cases have been filed against Manojit since 2023, and timely police action in those could have impacted the course of events. The court has also asked why no substantial action was taken despite multiple FIRs already being on record against the accused.

Manojit's lawyer, Raju Ganguly, stated in court that his client is a victim of political conspiracy. Police said the ongoing forensic test will assist in verifying identities of those present during the alleged incident at the law college. The investigation continues into the gangrape case and the other criminal charges filed against Manojit Mishra.
