A SpiceJet flight from Delhi to Kathmandu was forced to return to bay on Thursday after another aircraft reported a suspected fire at its tail. The incident occurred while the Boeing 737-8 aircraft was taxiing at Delhi Airport.
The airline clarified that no warnings or alerts were observed in the cockpit during the suspected tailpipe fire. However, the pilots decided to return as a precautionary measure. Following the incident, detailed engineering checks were carried out, which revealed no abnormalities in the aircraft.
SpiceJet confirmed that the affected flight, SG041, was grounded. Sources said the service faced a delay of over four hours before it was scheduled to take off in the morning.
According to aviation safety manuals, tailpipe fires usually occur during engine start or shutdown on the ground, often due to excess fuel in the combustion chamber. These fires are typically visible externally but may not trigger cockpit fire warnings, making ground reports crucial.
