Katwa Municipality chairman resigns, cites health concerns despite appeals to stay

Kamalakanta Chakraborty has resigned as chairman of the Katwa Municipality in Purba Bardhaman, citing health-related reasons. He submitted his resignation letter to the office of the Sub-Divisional Officer on Friday and stated that his physical condition no longer allows him to continue discharging the responsibilities of the post.

Along with the chairman, Ward No. 14 councillor Gunen Chattopadhyay and Ward No. 12 councillor Falguni Mukhopadhyay had also submitted resignation letters seeking relief from their responsibilities. All three leaders stated that their decisions were based on personal circumstances and were not linked to political issues.

Explaining his decision, Kamalakanta Chakraborty said he was no longer physically capable of carrying out the duties of chairman. Falguni Mukhopadhyay also cited health concerns and said her family members were worried about her condition. Gunen Chattopadhyay similarly attributed his resignation decision to health-related reasons.

The Katwa Municipality consists of 20 wards and is controlled by the Trinamool Congress with a substantial majority. After Chakraborty expressed his intention to resign, fellow councillors urged him to remain in office and reconsider his decision. However, he maintained that he would not withdraw his resignation.

According to party sources, Gunen Chattopadhyay and Falguni Mukhopadhyay later withdrew their resignation decisions. The focus has therefore shifted to the implications of the chairman’s departure. The resignation came on the same day that Firhad Hakim stepped down as Mayor of Kolkata and Uttam Barik resigned as Sabhadhipati of the Purba Medinipur Zilla Parishad.
