Motilal Gupta Road in Kolkata has been closed to all vehicular traffic for a period of 90 days with immediate effect to facilitate sewerage pipeline laying work. The closure impacts several government and private bus routes, including AC-31, S-31, 21, SD4/1, and the Sarada Park–Anandapur Mini Bus, along with heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and medium goods vehicles (MGVs). This measure is part of infrastructure upgrades under the Kolkata Environmental Improvement Investment Programme (KEIIP).
According to the traffic circulation plan, vehicles traveling from Muchipara crossing to Sakherbazaar crossing will be diverted via Raja Ram Mohan Roy Road (westbound), then proceed through Chowrasta/James Long Sarani crossing and Biren Roy Road (eastbound) to reach D.H. Road. From there, vehicles must take a left turn onto D.H. Road southbound toward Sakherbazaar crossing. This route is designated for all large vehicles and buses affected by the closure.
For the return journey from Sakherbazaar crossing to Muchipara crossing, affected vehicles will travel along D.H. Road, turning onto Santosh Roy Road, then take a left at James Long Sarani crossing heading northbound. Vehicles must then take a right turn at the James Long Sarani/Raja Ram Mohan Roy Road crossing towards the east and continue on Raja Ram Mohan Roy Road (eastbound) to reach Muchipara crossing. The Kolkata Police and KEIIP authorities have implemented this diversion to manage traffic flow during the closure period.
The closure and diversion plan will remain effective for ninety days starting from the commencement of the sewerage pipeline work. Authorities have requested all commuters and transport operators to comply with the new traffic directions and follow signage for smooth circulation. The work aims to improve the city’s sewer infrastructure and minimize disruption by establishing clear alternate routes for affected vehicles.
