Gulshan Colony in Kolkata has recently been at the center of an incident involving workers from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). On Monday, KMC engineers and staff entered the area to carry out drainage pipe installation as part of an ongoing civic infrastructure project. The workers, who were on site to execute the task, were reportedly attacked by local residents. The incident, which occurred as they attempted to carry out their duties, was captured on CCTV footage. The video clearly shows KMC staff being pushed from behind and threatened with weapons, including swords and sickles.
The altercation reportedly began when the engineers and staff began their work, installing drainage pipes on land that the local residents claimed was private property. According to the locals, the installation of the pipes on this land was unauthorized. The workers were allegedly subjected to physical assault, and the engineer was reportedly chased with swords and sickles, which led to heightened tension in the area. The attack has raised concerns regarding safety and the functioning of government projects in certain localities.
In response to the incident, Tarek Singh, the Member in Charge (MIC) for Drainage, confirmed that an FIR has been filed against the individuals involved in the assault at the Kasba police station. He condemned the attack as a reprehensible act and reported that Mayor Firhad Hakim has been informed about the situation. Singh also emphasized that if any local resident submits a formal complaint stating that government workers are being regularly attacked in the area, then the KMC will take strict action to address the issue and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
