The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has ordered the demolition of an illegal portion of the house jointly owned by former RG Kar Hospital principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh and his wife Sangita Ghosh. The civic body directed that the unauthorized rooftop construction at the property in Beleghata be removed within 45 days following a hearing into alleged building rule violations.
According to KMC sources, the property is located at 83, Badan Roy Lane in Ward No. 33 under the Beleghata area. The proceedings began after a complaint regarding illegal construction was filed by Anshuman Sarkar. Following the complaint, the civic body initiated a hearing process, and after proceedings held on May 14, the demolition order was issued.
During the inspection and verification process, KMC officials identified three alleged violations in the building when compared with the sanctioned construction plan. Investigators found that a new pergola structure measuring around 5.425 square metres with a height of 2.05 metres had been constructed on the rooftop without approval in the sanctioned plan.
The civic body also identified a spiral iron staircase installed on the rooftop to access the lift machine room. In addition, officials found that a doorway on the second floor had been replaced with a newly constructed brick wall. According to the report, these alterations violated Sections 133 and 134 of the KMC Building Rules, 2009.
During the hearing, the complainant argued that the rooftop pergola should not be allowed to remain as it was unauthorized. Sandip Ghosh reportedly admitted before the hearing authority that the pergola structure was not included in the building completion plan. After hearing both sides, the KMC Special Officer ordered complete demolition of the illegal rooftop structure within the stipulated 45-day period.
