The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Workers’ Union (CITU) staged a protest at Kolkata Municipal Bhavan, demanding immediate payment of pending salaries, pensions, and overdue promotions. Protesters claimed that KMC’s financial crisis had halted new appointments, delayed pension disbursement for months, and left contractual workers unpaid. Union leaders alleged that despite repeated appeals, the administration had failed to address these issues, forcing them to take to the streets.
Demonstrators stated that every year, promotions were being stalled without any clear justification, affecting career growth and job security. They also claimed that contract workers had not received their salaries for months, making it difficult for them to sustain their livelihoods. “The corporation is running on mere assurances, but workers are suffering due to unpaid dues,” a protester said. The union alleged that KMC’s financial mismanagement was pushing employees into distress.
The protesting workers planned to submit a memorandum to Mayor Firhad Hakim, but he reportedly stated that he would not be available before March 24. This announcement drew further criticism from demonstrators, who accused the administration of neglecting their concerns. The union has warned of intensifying protests if their demands are not met soon.
