Kochi Convention center explosion: One fatality, Dozens injured | Watch video

In a tragic incident in Kerala's Kochi district, an explosion at the Zamra International Convention & Exhibition Centre in Kalamassery during a prayer meeting of Jehovah’s Witnesses resulted in the loss of one life and left more than 20 individuals injured. The explosion occurred at approximately 9:30 am, while over 2,000 people were attending the Jehovah's Witnesses convention.

The three-day prayer meeting, scheduled to conclude on Sunday, was disrupted by the incident. Authorities, including fire personnel and police, swiftly responded to the scene, with the National Security Guards (NSG) and counter-terrorism units also dispatched to the Jehovah's Witnesses Church. Injured individuals were admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital in Kalamassery and private hospitals.

Kerala's Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, expressed his condolences and announced that top police officials, including the state's director general of police (DGP), were en route to the incident location. The cause of the explosion, which resulted in multiple blasts inside the convention center, is under investigation. Kerala's Health Minister, Veena George, instructed health department officials to provide the best possible treatment to the injured individuals and urged all health workers, including doctors on leave, to return immediately.
