Kolkata's Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (NSCBI) has achieved a significant milestone by welcoming the Airbus Beluga XL for the first time. The aircraft landed on Tuesday night at 10:43 PM, arriving from Bahrain International Airport. The Beluga XL, an upgraded version of the Beluga ST, is the largest aircraft in its series, designed specifically for transporting oversized cargo, primarily aircraft components such as wings and fuselages.
This landmark event is notable as it underscores Kolkata Airport's growing significance as a vital hub for aviation in Eastern India. Previously, the airport had accommodated Beluga ST series aircraft, but the arrival of the XL marks a new level of operational capability. The aircraft was greeted with a ceremonial water salute, highlighting the importance of this occasion.
The Beluga XL originated from the Airbus factory in Toulouse, France, and is transporting critical equipment and parts to another Airbus unit in Tianjin, China. Its stop at Kolkata was essential for crew rest, adhering to crew flight duty time limitations (FDTL), and refueling, as Kolkata is currently the only airport in Eastern India equipped to handle such a large aircraft.
The Beluga XL (Airbus A330-743L) is part of Airbus's specialized fleet, enabling efficient transport of large components necessary for aircraft manufacturing. This historic landing not only enhances Kolkata Airport's operational profile but also strengthens its role in the global supply chain for the aviation industry. After refueling on Wednesday evening, the Beluga XL is set to continue its journey to Tianjin, solidifying Kolkata's status as an important aviation link in the region.
