Kolkata Class 3 student death: Family alleges police inaction, BJP sets 24-hour deadline for arrests

The family of nine-year-old Ayush Kumar Nath, a Class III student from Kolkata, has alleged police inaction in connection with his death and is seeking further intervention after no arrests were reportedly made 12 days after the incident. On Friday, Ayush’s father met BJP leader Locket Chatterjee and raised concerns about the progress of the investigation into the case.

According to the family, the incident began on May 13 when Ayush, a student of Maharishi Vidyamandir in the Bansdroni area, fell ill during school hours. The family alleged that school authorities were aware of his condition until the sixth period but did not arrange medical assistance. They further claimed that he was made to sit on a back bench despite his worsening health.

The family also alleged that while leaving the school after classes, Ayush fell from a staircase and sustained a serious head injury. He was shifted between multiple hospitals for treatment and remained in a coma for 11 days before dying on May 24. Following his death, his father, Ashish Kumar Nath, submitted a written complaint against the school authorities at Netaji Nagar Police Station.

The matter escalated on May 26 when parents staged a protest and road blockade outside the school. According to the family, police responded to the protest with a baton charge and subsequently filed cases against some of the participating parents. The family has alleged that no action has been taken against those named in the complaint despite the passage of time.

After meeting the family, Locket Chatterjee stated that the matter would be brought before Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. She said that if no arrests are made within the next 24 hours, BJP leaders would organise a protest at the concerned police station. She also questioned the role of the police in the case and expressed support for the family’s demand for action.
