A Kolkata Police constable, Arun Kumar Das, was found intoxicated while on duty outside the emergency department of Calcutta Medical College on Saturday night, leading to chaos among patients and their families. The incident occurred between 10:00 and 10:30 PM when Das suddenly collapsed near the emergency ward. Initially, bystanders assumed he had fallen ill, but upon medical examination, it was confirmed that he was heavily intoxicated. Other police personnel present at the hospital quickly removed him from public view.
Eyewitnesses reported that Das was visibly unable to maintain his balance and exhibited behavior typical of extreme intoxication. “We thought he needed medical help, but it turned out he was drunk,” said a patient’s relative. The scene led to an uproar among those present, with many questioning how an on-duty police officer could be found in such a state in a critical area like a hospital emergency ward. The officer was deployed to manage hospital security and control the crowd, a routine measure at Calcutta Medical College due to the heavy influx of patients.
Following the incident, additional police personnel arrived at the hospital and took Das away. While there has been no official statement from the police regarding any disciplinary action, the incident has raised concerns over security enforcement at hospitals. Families of patients have demanded strict monitoring of on-duty officers and assurance that such incidents will not be repeated.
