Bengal Govt elevates IPS Ajay Mukund Ranade to DGP (Law and Order)
A 44-year-old man has been arrested in the Kasba area of Kolkata following the alleged rape of a seven-year-old girl in his residence. The incident occurred on Sunday evening when the accused reportedly took advantage of an empty house to force the minor inside. According to reports, the victim and the suspect are immediate neighbors, a factor that allegedly allowed the man to lure or force the child into his home without immediate detection.
The situation escalated quickly when local residents became aware of the assault. Witnesses intervened, reportedly apprehending the suspect and physically confronting him before authorities arrived on the scene. Following a formal complaint lodged at the Kasba Police Station, officers took the man into custody and initiated legal proceedings under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The suspect was produced before the Alipore Court on Monday, where investigators requested his remand.
The police investigation is now focusing on the suspect's history and whether this was an isolated incident. Detectives are looking into whether the minor had been subjected to prior physical abuse or harassment by the neighbor. Part of the probe involves interviewing the victim’s family to determine if any suspicious behavior had been noted previously, given the proximity of their homes. Authorities also intend to investigate if the accused has any prior record of similar offenses against others in the community.
The news of the assault has caused significant tension and public outcry within the heart of Kolkata. Local residents have expressed deep anger over the brutality of the crime, demanding the most stringent legal punishment possible for the perpetrator. As the case moves forward in the Alipore Court, the police remain committed to a thorough interrogation of the suspect to build a comprehensive case and ensure justice for the young victim.
