No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
Kolkata Metro, a lifeline for millions of commuters across the city and suburbs/townships is gearing up for some much-needed revitalization just as the festive season ends. At a lively celebration marking the 41st birthday of the Kolkata Metro today, the Kolkata Metro General Manager Shubhranshu Shekhar Mishra dropped a series of exciting announcements for the commuters. The iconic Blue Line, Kolkata Metro's oldest artery dating back over four decades, which has been hampering by daily technical glitches from signal hiccups to maintenance woes and late schedule, GM Mishra revealed that comprehensive audits by RITES (Rail India Technical and Economic Service) are already underway to pinpoint and tackle these issues head-on, with permissions secured for cutting-edge CBTC (Communication-Based Train Control) signalling promising smoother, safer rides. The stuck works at the Blue Line's endpoints—Kavi Subhash and Shahid Khudiram stations—will resume immediately after Chhath Puja next week, aiming for full resolution three to four years, claims Kolkata Metro General Manager.
Shifting gears to expansion of services, the Orange Line is next in line for a major push, with delays at the Chingrihata stretch finally set to start in the second week of November after key hurdles for long time. This is a bold stride towards linking the Orange Line all the way to the Jai Hind Biman Bandar Kolkata International Airport, with hopes pinned to get operational by next year December 2026—a game-changer for airport-bound travelers tired of traffic snarls. Kolkata Metro administration are optimistic of seamless connectivity that could enhance commute times and ease the strain. As Metro GM Mishra announces these updates signals a new chapter for the entire Kolkata Metro network, blending nostalgia for its storied past with ambition for the better future.
Looking further ahead, the Metro's blueprint green lights for a sprawling 57-kilometer addition across the new Lines. By 2026, authorities aims to wrap up 29 kilometers of construction, rolling out 19 kilometers for public use. The Purple Line from Joka to Dharmatala is targeted to complete by 2029, while the Yellow Line's expansion from Kolkata Airport to Michael Nagar will also targets completion by the year 2029.
