Kolkata Metro chokes again, services halt between Maidan & Dum Dum, triggers jam

Kolkata's central and northern parts are facing severe traffic jam as a major technical fault has once again halted Metro services on the the Blue Line (North-South Corridor). It led to a massive increase in surface traffic, particularly causing a standstill at key points like the Exide Crossing, where the rush-hour jam is now significantly worse than usual

The crisis began between 12 noon and 12:30 pm today, reportedly due to a mechanical fault detected on the Upline near the Mahatma Gandhi Road station. Following the detection of the serious issue, all Metro services on both the Downline and the Upline between Dum Dum and Maidan were temporarily suspended.

To manage the fallout, the Metro Railway authorities have implemented truncated service operations on the Blue Line. Currently, train services are running only in two disjointed sections: one from Dum Dum to Dakshineswar in the north, and the other from Tollygunge (Mahanayak Uttam Kumar) to Shaheed Khudiram (Kavi Subhash area) in the south. The large gap in the middle section—Maidan to Tollygunge—remains unsupported by the metro, forcing lakhs of passengers onto overcrowded buses and taxis.
