Kolkata Metro Railway has announced significant modifications to its operational schedules for the upcoming Friday on account of the government holiday for Muharram. Anticipating lower commuter footfall on the public holiday, transit authorities decided to scale down the total number of daily train trips across multiple main corridors. Commuters have been advised by the administrative board to expect slightly longer waiting intervals between trains throughout the day and plan their local travel itineraries in advance.
The service cuts will primary impact the city's three oldest and busiest corridors: the Blue Line, the Green Line, and the Yellow Line. Despite the overall drop in the frequency of trains, the department has provided much-needed relief to regular daily passengers by confirming that there will be absolutely no alterations made to the departure times of the day's first and last trains across all terminal stations.
On the North-South corridor or Blue Line (Dakshineswar – Kavi Subhash), daily operations will drop from the standard 260 weekday services down to 216 trips. Similarly, the East-West Green Line (Sector Five – Sealdah / Howrah Maidan – Esplanade) will see its count reduced from 228 daily trains to 186. The Yellow Line (Noapara – Barasat via Airport) will also experience a notable decrease, functioning with just 92 trains instead of its typical weekday slate of 120. Furthermore, direct connectivity from the Jai Hind Airport station to Shahid Khudiram station will be slashed from seven direct trains down to just four services.
In contrast to the major structural adjustments on the main networks, operations on the peripheral lines will remain completely unaffected. Metro officials explicitly clarified that train frequencies along the Joka-Taratala route (the Purple Line) and the Kabi Subhash-Hemant Mukherjee section (the Orange Line) will continue to operate normally. These two routes are set to follow their standard established timetables specified for administrative public holidays with no additional cuts.
