The Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) has announced a significant increase in services on the Joka-Majherhat route. Starting from May 13, the number of trains on this route will rise to 62, with 31 trains in both directions. This decision comes in response to the growing demand from passengers and aims to alleviate overcrowding on this busy metro line. The current service operates 40 trains from Monday to Friday, but the new schedule will enhance capacity to accommodate the increasing number of commuters.
The revised timetable will see the first metro from Majherhat departing at 7:57 AM, a shift from the earlier 8:27 AM. From Joka, the first train will leave at 8:00 AM. The last train from both stations will remain at 8:00 PM. Despite the increase in services, the metro will not operate on weekends (Saturday and Sunday) for now. This change is expected to improve the travel experience for thousands of daily passengers and reduce congestion during peak hours.
In addition to the Joka-Majherhat route, the metro authorities are also preparing to launch a new service between Salt Lake's Sector Five and Howrah Maidan. The necessary approvals for this new section are in the final stages, and once granted, the service is expected to begin shortly. This expansion is part of the ongoing efforts to improve Kolkata's metro network and provide more efficient public transport options for the city’s growing population.
